EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BOXILATES™ AT OUR STUDIO

What is BOXILATES™?

BOXILATES™ is a dynamic fusion of Mat Pilates and Fitness Boxing. It’s an interval style workout that combines the functional benefits of Pilates – longer, leaner muscles and increased joint health – with the high intensity cardio and co ordination of boxing. We don't want to give too much away before you try your first class but we will say this: you will definitely get a little sweaty and will enjoy some stress release punching in this class!

Who is the instructor leading these classes?

Chris will be taking the majority of the
BOXILATES™ classes! Chris started boxing at 18 (10 years ago!) and automatically fell in love with the cardio and high intensity aspect of the sport (and the punching!). Chris continued his boxing training for a number of years, at one stage training for an amateur fight. Chris continues his own boxing training at home and is very excited to be spear heading the BOXILATES™ classes for us!

Who can participate in this class?

BOXILATES™ is a workout for anyone who is interested in adding some cardio to their Pilates routine! Like we do with our Reformer and Floor classes, BOXILATES™ will be modified for those who are experiencing any discomfort throughout the class. BOXILATES™ can also be modified for pre and post-natal clients, as long as they have been given the all-clear by their doctor.

Do I need to do an Introductory class if I have boxed before?

Yes you do! Think of our Introductory class as a nice refresher to both Boxing and Pilates. If you did attend our BOXILATES™ Masterclass, you do not need to attend another Introductory class. However, why not attend a complimentary class during our launch week so that you have the opportunity to further improve your technique and cardiovascular endurance?!

How long does a BOXILATES™ class run for?

The Introductory class class runs for 75 minutes, as boxing technique and body placement must be explained and practised. Our standard BOXILATES™ class will run for 50 minutes.

What do I need to bring to a BOXILATES™ class?

To participate in a BOXILATES™ class, you need comfortable exercise gear, a towel, inners for our gloves (this is explained below) and we recommend you bring a water bottle. If you forget your water bottle, we sell water at the studio. We provide the gloves and pads necessary for the class, however, if you have your own gloves you are welcome to bring them along. Please note that if you bring your own gloves, you still must wear inners when you use the studio pads. Glove & Pad Inners will be available to purchase at the studio. Inners MUST BE WORN to participate in the class for hygiene purposes. Just as socks must be worn in the Reformer classes, inners must be worn in BOXILATES™ classes. Unfortunately No Inners means No Play:( Inners will be sold for $6 a pair or you are welcome to bring your own. Wrist wraps will be sold for $12 a pair. If you have weak, sore  or hypermobile wrists we highly recommend that you do wrap your wrists for extra safety and protection. Don't worry if you don't know how to wrap your wrists, as we will show you how!

When do BOXILATES™ classes start?

Our BOXILATES™ launch week runs from October 10th til the 15th!! All existing clients receive a complimentary Floor Trial class to use during this launch week! Please note that all of our BOXILATES™ classes scheduled for this launch week will be Introductory classes. If you have your heart set on trying another one of our Floor classes (Total Barre, Mums & Bubs Barre, Stretch or Matwork) you are welcome to use your complimentary class to trial one of these classes instead. Existing clients, please see an instructor at the front desk, email inquiries@premiumpilatesstudio.com or contact 0402 680 724 to claim your complimentary class!

How do I book if I am not an existing client to Premium Pilates Studio or if I want to book my second BOXILATES™ class?

You can book and pay online through our website by clicking HERE or by using our APP.

What is the price of a BOXILATES™ class?

For all of you who decide that you love BOXILATES™, this class is categorised as a Floor class and therefore will follow the same cost structure as our other Floor classes. For all of you who pay for our monthly Floor pack, BOXILATES™ is included in this monthly price!

We can't wait to see what you all think of this brand new class!! BOOK NOW to avoid missing out as classes are filling up for our launch week. Be one of the FIRST in BRISBANE to experience this exclusive fusion of Pilates & Boxing!

TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY - SPOTLIGHT ON DEB

Our Transformation Tuesday client, Deb, is a very special, fun loving and determined woman who has been with us since October 2013!

Deb initially came to see us as she was suffering from a very sore lower back and tight upper back. Deb's first class was very low level, consisting of only a few abdominal exercises. I remember that Deb had great trouble holding her legs up in tabletop and that we moved very slowly through exercises. However she persevered and week by week Deb's core became stronger, her confidence on the Reformer grew and her technique improved considerably. Her exercises started to advance and the number of repetitions she could get through without having a break improved dramatically. Deb gets into tabletop with ease now; in fact, we often find her starting abdominal exercises of her own accord before we have begun the class! Getting her feet in the straps used to be very difficult for Deb (I've never told her this but I wrote a warning in Deb's notes after her second class that says 'do not let her get into the straps without assistance!!'), however nowadays she needs no help whatsoever.

Deb's flexibility and posture have also improved substantially, which, paired with her strong core, have all factored into her pain free lower back. One of the bonus benefits that not just myself and Chris but her weekly classmates have noticed about Deb is how much her body has toned up from Pilates, particularly her little waist and slim arms! As Deb mentions below she may currently be a similar weight to when she started Pilates, however she looks several kilograms smaller, as the tone to her abs, arms, legs and bottom are very apparent!

No matter what is going on in her life, Deb has made time to come to Pilates. Whenever we have to cancel Saturday classes or when Deb cannot attend her usual class, she approaches us weeks before to book in a make-up class. Deb's dedication and commitment to Pilates has been unwavering since October 2013. This is one of the main reasons why Deb's endurance, technique and strength have improved so much; because of her tenacity, her persistence and her perseverance

Fast forward to mid 2016, Deb can be found in her weekly Reformer class smashing out planking exercises, advanced movements and very tough and long butt-burning series! Deb's lower back pain is no more; in fact, we often forget that Deb ever suffered from lower back pain in the past, as she has strengthened her core so much that no exercises are off limits! She is an absolute joy to teach as she is so determined to try new exercises and to work hard, whilst also enjoying a laugh at the same time. When Deb's courage on the Reformer developed, she started to show us a hilariously funny and witty side of her. Deb, you make our Saturday's so much brighter and more enjoyable. We are so proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone and trying Pilates almost three years ago and for sticking to it! You have come so far. We just adore you and are so happy to have you in our lives!

Scroll down to read all about Deb's Pilates journey in her own words:

What made you start Pilates back in October 2013?

I went to see a Physio regarding my back.  I had fallen down a couple of stairs (carrying my dog at the time) and hurt my back just below my waist.  The Physio suggested that I should try Pilates as this would help my back.  Also not long after getting married I had started to put on a lot of weight (which I swore I would never do) and then a few years later I lost all that weight.  I had become obsessed with walking but had got bored with that and wanted to try something new but didn’t know what.  Pilates was my answer.

Has Pilates helped your lower back pain?

It is amazing just how much Pilates has helped with my back pain.  I am a legal secretary so I am in a sedentary position for most of the day and by the end of the day, my back would be really hurting.  I also found it really painful getting into bed at night and out of bed in the morning.  Now the pain has absolutely gone and that is one of the main reasons for my continuing to attend Pilates classes.

How do you feel your body, mind and life has changed since starting Pilates?

I certainly feel happier within myself about my body shape.  Just before I started Pilates, I was probably around about the same size and weight as I am now but I was really unhappy with my body tone.  As you get older, gravity, unfortunately, takes over.  I notice now that I am so much stronger because I now have muscles (as small as they may be).  I can now lift certain things that I would have had trouble with before and would then have a sore back.  Coming to a Pilates class is also great for your mind.  It is your time to do something for yourself and no one can take that away from you.  Everyone should have some down-time for themselves – you should always make time.

What has kept you so dedicated and motivated to continue Pilates for the past almost three years?

I can honestly say that I have never stuck to anything in my whole life for so long as I have with Pilates.  I have never been a work-out person but there is something therapeutic about Pilates.  To continuously see that your body is changing for the better gives you more confidence in yourself, it gives you the courage and determination to keep trying harder and more complex exercises and with perseverance you are able to achieve goals, even if they be small.  When I first started Pilates, I had great trouble even getting my feet in the straps as well as in the table top position.  Now it just seems to come naturally, well almost.

What is your favourite thing about your Pilates classes?

I absolutely love coming to classes because of the wonderful people I share my classes with each week.  They know who they are.  They give me the courage and confidence to continue working hard.  They are both an inspiration and I feel we have become great Pilates Pals.

Of course I have to mention Em and Chris.  As I have already mentioned when I was seeing the Physio, he suggested that I should try out Pilates.  At the end of my session with him, he introduced me to Em who had just finished taking a class.  She was so warm and encouraging and gave me immediate confidence that she would be able to help me with my back pain and my overall fitness and toning.  That has not changed.  Both she and Chris are wonderful and talented people who love to share and help us all grow and achieve.  Thank you both.

TRANSFORMATION TUESDAY FEATURING SARAH

Sarah holds a very special place in our heart here at the studio, so it is only fitting that we desperately wanted her to be one of our Transformation Tuesday clients! Sarah started with us a mere eight weeks after having her first child. Sarah started with very basic abdominal exercises, due to the traumatic nature of the emergency c-section that she had recently undergone, however I remember being amazed by how quickly she gained core strength. Before long Sarah was performing advanced exercises with control and stability! Her lower back pain ceased, her hips loosened up and her posture improved dramatically. Sarah is a true testament to how much can be achieved with a steel resolve and a positive attitude.

Sarah's workouts continued to advance as her technique continued to progress and her strength greatly increased. Did I mention that she was running every single 5 and 10 kilometre run she could sign up for?! There was no stopping this lady! Her physical transformation was also considerable. Sarah shed her post baby weight and greatly toned up and trimmed down. Then came August 2014, when she fell pregnant again. Sarah knew that her pre natal workouts would change, however she took it all in her stride and continued to work hard. As soon as humanly possible after the birth of her second baby Sarah was back in the studio and once again worked incredibly hard to return to her pre baby fitness and body, which she did in a short amount of time!

Then March 2016 hit and Sarah experienced severe pain with her knee, such pain that she required surgery. Sarah continued to come to Pilates, upping her consistent classes from two to three times a week for rehab and never once complaining about the restrictions her knee injury resulted in. Since having surgery on her knee in late May Sarah has bounced back (would you expect any less from this super determined woman?!) and is almost 100% back to her pre injury Pilates workouts! We don't think we could be prouder of you Sarah!

Throughout the past three plus years we have seen Sarah go through so much and come out the other side much stronger. You are an absolute joy to teach Sarah as you are always keen to learn new exercises, to work just that little bit harder and to make every single class friendly and fun! To read more about Sarah's amazing Pilates journey, scroll down.

What made you try out Pilates back in early May 2013?

After a difficult delivery of my first child (which resulted in an emergency c-section) my obstetrician recommended commencing Pilates to assist with strengthening my core. I started looking around my local area, and Premium Pilates came up.

What has kept you so devoted to your Pilates practice?

Pilates is my time, it’s enjoyable, challenging and empowering. I notice when I miss my usual class, and feel quite out of sorts. The instructors continue to keep me motivated with their high energy, jokes and challenging exercises. Each class is different so you cannot get bored, and with a small class size everyone is friendly and encouraging. The fun and supportive environment is a real credit to Em and Chris.

Your body has gone through a LOT these past three years - two births, two pre and post natal periods, a knee injury and super tight hips (just to name a few!) How has your regular Pilates classes assisted your body through these challenges?

Everything can be modified, something for everyone.
Pilates has given me strength I never knew I had. Specifically my hips, core and glute strength has helped me with my other training. It supports my running and weight lifting activities which I enjoy.  It also elevates a lot of back pain and postural issues I have from carrying kids and completing desk work. The increase in flexibility is wonderful as well.

How do you feel your body, mind and life has changed since starting Pilates?

Improved mental clarity and endurance. If you can get through burners (a very tough Reformer exercise, named burners by Chris for an obvious reason; because they make your abdominals BURN!) you can get through lots of things. I find at the end of class, even though I am exhausted my energy has increased and I feel happy.  A pain free lifestyle is wonderful.

What is your favourite thing about your Pilates practice?

Completing exercises  I never thought I could do (Snake and Arabesque - which are super advanced and challenging Reformer exercises!)

Thanks so much for sharing your inspiring story Sarah! We love how much you love and value Pilates! Stay tuned for next Tuesday's Transformation story everyone!
